Who Inspires You?
In 2002 I
knew I wanted my work to change direction, but wasn't at all sure
where I wanted to go. So I hired a coach to help me work it out.
At the outset, Virginia
asked me some very powerful questions, including 'Who inspires you and
why?'.
My answers
showed me a lot about the qualities I aspire to, what I value about
myself and the life I really want to live. Some of the people on
my list have struggled against tremendous odds, standing firm in what
they believed in. Some took all their courage and spoke up,
saying what needed to be said. Others simply lived a life of
absolute integrity, service and cheerfulness. And for me the
most inspiring of all are those who empower others to claim a full,
and fulfilling, life for themselves.
Who is on
your list?
Make a list
for yourself and have space on your list to add: What is it about each
person that inspires you? What can you learn about the qualities
you value in yourself, and about the way of life you aspire to?
The power of
authentic presence
Yesterday morning I
added another name to my list, Onesmus Mutuku who I heard speaking
on the radio. He works with the Salvation
Army supporting people who have HIV/AIDS in Kenya. Onesmus
spoke eloquently from his experience of the tremendous power of
visiting and simply being with a person and how that can give them
the courage for their journey, and to seek treatment that could
save a life. Bringing our authentic presence to be with
someone is perhaps the greatest gift we can ever give. Find
out more about the Salvation Army project in Rhidian Brook's book
More Than Eyes Can See.
Hear Rhidian and Onesmus speaking on 6

Who will you
visit with your authentic presence today?
Have a great summer,
